Jordan Valley
Water Conservation District Demonstration Gardens
8215 South 1300 West, West Jordan map
The gardens were designed
to serve as an example to the public regarding the proper methods of
landscaping in an arid environment. During the tour, you will wander
through the six “neighborhoods,” each containing
options for plant materials that can complement the tone you prefer
and the conditions
of your site. The areas are monitored for water consumption to demonstrate
the savings afforded by each
transition from the traditional to high mountain desert approach. Since
their creation, the gardens
have expanded beyond the neighborhoods to include the “Garden
Park,” beds of vegetables and other
annuals, turf alternatives, and an extensive display of ornamental
grasses, all of which will be
part of the tour. The tour will be conducted by Leslie Hughes, a Salt
Lake County Master Gardener who has been a horticultural
assistant at Jordan Valley for two years.
Salt Lake County Master Gardener Projects
Gilgal Garden
749 East 500 South, Salt Lake City map (north
side of the street, behind the iron gate)
Gilgal Garden was begun in 1945 by Thomas Child in his back yard. It now contains
12 original sculptures and more than 70 stones engraved with scriptures, poems,
and philosophical texts.
After Child's death in 1963 the garden was not kept
up and slid into disrepair. A few years ago it was to be sold
to a private developer, but the Friends of Gilgal Garden,
FOGG, stepped in and, in a three year campaign, raised the
funds to buy the garden. FOGG asked the Salt Lake Master Gardeners
to help with their efforts to restore the gardens, and since
then, with lots of Master Gardener sweat and labor, it has begun to regain its own unique luster.
Murray City Park
330 E. Vine, Murray map (look for the big Indian head on the east side of State
Street)
The Murray Park project is unlike other projects; it isn’t just one
garden in one place. The park project includes rose gardens, annual and
perennial beds, native plant areas,
and an arboretum with unique trees and shrubs.
There are fifteen gardens in
the main park located at 330 E. Vine and eleven gardens
scattered throughout the city. In the arboretum is a cactus garden
with drought tolerant
perennials. By the amphitheater is a wild area for birds, bees, bats,
and butterflies.
There are a variety of
native plants at Kennecott Nature Center on the Jordan River.
On the State Street islands are annuals with the exception of the largest
island which
is planted with water-wise perennials.
Utah AIDS Foundation
1408 South 1100 East, Salt Lake City map
(west side of the street.)
The Utah AIDS Foundation Garden Project consists of four small garden areas of varying size. Salt Lake Master
Gardeners began working on this project in 1999 and have
created practical urban gardens using drought-rolerant plants with good tolerance
for the stesses of city life.
Utah State Fair Park
155 North 1000 West, Salt Lake City map
The Master Gardeners plan, plant, and maintain the garden fronting
the Administration building at the Utah Fair Park. The garden is anchored
at one end by a perennial garden planned and planted originally by
Don and Bev Sudbury. This part of the garden features daylilies, roses,
iris, lavender, sage, crocosmia, and many others providing color and
texture in spring, summer and autumn. The rectangular lawn is bordered
with viburnum and dotted with spring flowering trees, including flowering
pear and redbud. A pond sports goldfish, lilies, cattails and other
aquatic plants and is surrounded by several groundcovers. Some less
common plants can be found in the garden including castor bean and
artichoke. The two annual beds vary each year according to the whims
of the gardeners, the generosity of donors, and of course help from
our extension agents. Something is sure to be in bloom.
Wheeler Historic Farm
6351 South 900 East, Salt Lake City map
Three major areas taken care of by the Master Gardeners are the flower
gardens surrounding the
house, the herb gardens and the vegetable gardens.
There are three herb beds around the house at Wheeler
Farm. One bed is located next to the house on the south side.
The second bed is also on the south side of the house about ten feet
away.
The third bed is the largest, located west of the house.
The beds are tended from late March through early November.
The herbs are harvested, dried and used in wreaths and other projects
at the farm.
The two vegetable gardens where originally play grounds
and were filled with sand about one foot deep. We have put in
hundreds of bags of leaves and grass cuttings. The farm has had loads
of farm manure brought over. These have been tilled and plowed for two years. We now
have water to each garden and will be able to water the crops.
In the south garden we grow pumpkins for Wheeler to use at their Halloween Festival and the
north garden is used to grow vegetables for the Fresh From the
Heart program, and for any Master Gardeners who come and work there and want to take something home.
